A Journey of Recovery & Connection: Ellen’s Story

Ellen moved into Beechgrove Care Home in April 2022, during a particularly difficult time in her life. She had recently suffered a stroke which significantly impacted her communication and overall independence. This made the transition into care necessary but very challenging, as she was reluctant to move into a care home. This change understandably caused her a great deal of anxiety, and in the early days of her time at Beechgrove, she preferred to remain in her room with minimal interaction.

Supporting Every Aspect of Wellbeing

Due to the effects of her stroke, Ellen initially found it extremely difficult to communicate her needs, wishes and feelings, which led to frustration and a sense of isolation. The compassionate team at Beechgrove Care Home was committed to our person-centred approach, so adopted patience and consistency to respect her boundaries and thoughtfully personalise her care. Staff spent time with Ellen in the comfort of her own private bedroom to build trust and provide reassurance at her own pace.

To support her communication, we enabled the help of the Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) team. These experts introduced the use of an iPad and picture cards, enabling Ellen to make choices and express her needs more effectively. Over time, through regular interaction and a person-centred approach, staff developed a strong and meaningful bond with Ellen. They have become highly attuned to her individual ways of communicating, including gestures, facial expressions and the familiar words she uses. As a result, staff are now often able to understand her wishes without the need for additional communication aids, which has significantly enhanced her confidence, comfort and sense of connection.

This resident’s daughter said, “The staff have an excellent rapport with mum which really puts me at ease and they are great at helping me understand what mum is trying to say.”

As well as supporting with her communication, the staff at Beechgrove Care Home have also been aiding Ellen's mobility since her arrival in 2022. Her family is thrilled at the massive improvement she has made; Ellen was not able to mobilise at all when she moved in, but is now able to walk to the bathroom with support, which her family say “down to the hard work and dedication of the staff.”

Other family members have also recognised the incredible progress Ellen has made thanks to the compassionate care at Beechgrove. Her sister said: “From the admission day, you could clearly see the level of care and compassion the staff demonstrated. Due to the communication difficulties, they made every effort to find out as much information about her as possible to ensure they knew what mattered to her and planned her care so that it was truly person-centred…

“It’s amazing the progress she has made... I can’t thank the staff enough for the exceptionally high standards of care delivered with compassion"

A Varied, Engaging Lifestyle

Over time, Ellen has taken huge steps in her emotional wellbeing and engagement within the home. She is now much more confident in leaving her room and finds joy in spending time in communal areas. She actively seeks out interaction with other residents and has become more socially involved, which has greatly improved her overall quality of life. Ellen particularly enjoys going out on trips in our very own minibus, which makes outings into our local area of Lanark safe and simple, giving residents and their families greater peace of mind. These outings provide Ellen with valuable stimulation, enjoyment and a sense of freedom and normality.

Ellen has a deep love for dogs, as they have always played a meaningful part in her life. Following the loss of her own beloved dog, staff recognised how significant this connection is to her emotional wellbeing. To support this, Beechgrove now ensures that Ellen continues to experience this important aspect of her identity through regular pet therapy. Staff occasionally bring in their own dogs, and her siblings also bring their dogs during visits, which brings Ellen great joy and comfort. These moments are very meaningful to her and support her overall happiness and emotional wellbeing.
